Understanding the Doshas
Discover your natural energy and create balance in your life
Have you ever noticed that some people thrive on routine while others need freedom? Some feel energised by movement, while others naturally seek stillness and comfort.
In holistic wellbeing traditions, these differences aren’t seen as flaws to fix, they’re understood as part of our unique nature.
Ayurveda, often translated as “the science of life,” is one of the world’s oldest holistic health systems. Originating in India over 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda views health as a dynamic balance between body, mind and environment.
At the heart of Ayurveda are the Doshas, energetic patterns that influence how we feel, think, digest, rest, respond to stress, and move through life.
Learning about your dosha can help you understand yourself more deeply and make choices that support balance rather than burnout.
This month’s Thrive Guide invites you to explore the three doshas and discover gentle ways to support your natural wellbeing.
What Are the Doshas?
Ayurveda teaches that everything in nature is made up of five elements:
- Earth
- Water
- Fire
- Air
- Space (Ether)
These combine to create three energetic forces called Doshas:
Vata = Air + Space
The energy of movement.
Pitta = Fire + Water
The energy of transformation.
Kapha = Earth + Water
The energy of stability.
We all contain all three doshas, but most people have one or two that are naturally more dominant.
When our doshas are balanced, we tend to feel vibrant and resilient.
When life becomes stressful, overstimulating, emotionally demanding or disconnected from our needs, the doshas can become imbalanced.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is awareness.
VATA DOSHA
The Energy of Movement
Vata is associated with movement, creativity and change.
People with strong Vata energy are often imaginative, enthusiastic and naturally curious.
Common Vata qualities:
- Creative
- Energetic
- Quick thinking
- Intuitive
- Flexible
- Expressive
Physically, Vata individuals may:
- Feel cold easily
- Have fluctuating energy
- Experience lighter sleep
- Notice variable digestion
- Feel sensitive to overstimulation
When Vata becomes out of balance:
You may notice:
- Feeling scattered
- Racing thoughts
- Anxiety or overwhelm
- Difficulty switching off
- Dryness
- Restlessness
- Irregular routines
Modern life can easily increase Vata — constant notifications, rushing, multitasking and lack of rest.
Ways to support Vata balance:
- Create gentle routines
- Eat warm, nourishing meals
- Slow down transitions
- Prioritise rest
- Spend time grounded in nature
- Choose calming therapies
Holistic treatments such as head massage, reflexology, Reiki and grounding crystal practices may feel particularly supportive when life feels fast and overstimulating.
Ask yourself:
Where in my life am I being asked to slow down?
PITTA DOSHA
The Energy of Transformation
Pitta represents heat, focus and determination.
Pitta types are often natural leaders who enjoy growth, purpose and getting things done.
Common Pitta qualities:
- Motivated
- Organised
- Intelligent
- Passionate
- Driven
- Focused
Physically, Pitta individuals may:
- Feel naturally warm
- Have strong digestion
- Enjoy activity
- Prefer structure
When Pitta becomes out of balance:
You may notice:
- Irritability
- Frustration
- Perfectionism
- Impatience
- Overworking
- Feeling emotionally “heated”
- Difficulty relaxing
Pitta imbalance often appears when we spend too long achieving without restoring.
Ways to support Pitta balance:
- Build pauses into your day
- Spend time near water
- Practice self-compassion
- Eat and move mindfully
- Release the pressure to always do more
- Explore cooling and calming rituals
Energy work and deeply restorative treatments can help create space for softness and reconnection.
Ask yourself:
What would happen if I allowed myself to receive instead of always doing?
KAPHA DOSHA
The Energy of Stability
Kapha brings grounding, nourishment and steadiness.
Kapha energy helps us feel supported, patient and connected.
People with strong Kapha qualities are often the people others turn to.
Common Kapha qualities:
- Calm
- Loyal
- Compassionate
- Patient
- Nurturing
- Stable
Physically, Kapha individuals may:
- Have steady energy
- Enjoy comfort and routine
- Sleep deeply
- Prefer calm environments
When Kapha becomes out of balance:
You may notice:
- Feeling stuck
- Low motivation
- Emotional heaviness
- Resistance to change
- Lack of inspiration
- Sluggishness
Kapha imbalance can develop when life becomes too repetitive or stagnant.
Ways to support Kapha balance:
- Introduce gentle movement
- Try something new
- Spend time outdoors
- Use uplifting rituals
- Stimulate creativity
- Reconnect with purpose
Balancing Kapha doesn’t mean pushing harder.
It means inviting fresh energy.
Ask yourself: Where am I ready for gentle movement and growth?
You Are Not Just One Dosha
One of the most important things to remember is that Ayurveda isn’t about placing yourself in a fixed category.
You are not simply “a Vata” or “a Pitta.”
You are a whole person with changing needs.
Your energy may shift:
- Through seasons
- During stressful periods
- Across different stages of life
- Depending on sleep, nourishment and emotional wellbeing
For example:
- Winter may increase Kapha qualities.
- Busy schedules may elevate Vata.
- High pressure periods may intensify Pitta.
The invitation is not to label yourself.
It’s to notice.
Seasonal Wisdom and the Doshas
Ayurveda also teaches that nature reflects what happens inside us.
Autumn & Early Winter → Vata season
A time to slow down, ground and nourish.
Summer → Pitta season
A time to cool, soften and avoid overextending.
Late Winter & Spring → Kapha season
A time to move, awaken and create momentum.
By living more seasonally, we often feel more connected and balanced.
Simple seasonal questions can be powerful:
What am I needing more of right now?
Warmth?
Rest?
Movement?
Space?
Using the Doshas in Everyday Life
You don’t need to overhaul your life to begin exploring Ayurveda.
Start with small moments of awareness.
Try asking:
Morning
How is my energy today?
Midday
What do I need more of?
Evening
What would help me feel restored?
You may begin noticing patterns:
- When your energy feels balanced
- What triggers stress
- What helps you return to yourself
These small acts of noticing can become powerful wellbeing practices.
Supporting Dosha Balance Through Holistic Therapies
Holistic wellbeing reminds us that healing is not only physical.
It includes:
- Rest
- Energy
- Touch
- Reflection
- Intention
- Connection
Many people find therapies such as:
- Reiki
- Reflexology
- Crystal therapy
- Head massage
offer opportunities to slow down, reconnect and create space for balance.
These practices don’t replace medical care — but they can become meaningful rituals of self-awareness and restoration.
A Simple Dosha Reflection
Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:
What energy feels strongest in me right now?
Do I feel:
- Busy and overstimulated? (Vata)
- Driven and pressured? (Pitta)
- Comfortable but stuck? (Kapha)
Then ask:
What is one gentle thing I could do today to create balance?
Small shifts often create meaningful change.
Ayurveda reminds us that wellbeing isn’t about becoming someone else.
It’s about understanding yourself more deeply.
The doshas invite us to listen.
To notice.
To honour the season we’re in.
And to remember that balance isn’t something we achieve once, it’s something we return to, again and again.
May this month’s Thrive Guide encourage you to tune into your own rhythms and create moments of nourishment, connection and calm.
Your body holds wisdom.
Your energy speaks.
Your wellbeing deserves attention.
